Florists and bookstore owners are rubbing their hands: Traditionally, during the San Jorge holiday – the local version of St. Valentine’s Day – the Catalans give each other roses and books. During this period Barcelona is full of fairs, literature readings and concerts. Also, on the April 23, the Palace of the Government of Catalonia opens the doors for everyone to visit. It is entirely worth it because you can see the Salon of St. George with your own eyes or rest in the shade of the Orange courtyard, as did the medieval executives.
Moreover, on this day we recommend you to visit the mayor’s building: actors, dressed as the well-known personalities of the past, will make a tour through the official’s kingdom showing it’s most famous parts like the Black Staircase and the Hall of the Saint. In the patio, the puppet theater will perform a play based on the most famous Catalonian legend – how the brave San Jorge killed the dragon, saving the beautiful princess, and how magically a red rose appeared from the beast’s wound. There will also be there a small fair, where the gentlemen can buy flowers for their ladies.
