The word that is the title of the exhibition is Spanish for “uprising”, “mutiny”, “rebellion”. When they become witness to such an event, even the most ordinary, earthbound people are unlikely ever to forget it. They carry it in their hearts for years. And for a creative nature, disobedience welling up and out into the streets is a still more profound kind of shock, a jolt that compels you to pick up your brush, your camera or your notebook. The exposition in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya delves into this material in the greatest possible detail, offering us paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, manuscripts and more, all of which came to be in the wake of civil unrest between the mid-nineteenth century and our early twenty-first.
