Few people know that in addition to Our Lady of Mercy, and Saint Eulalia, Barcelona has a third saint – the Holy Madrona. On Saturday there will be a celebration in Raval area that will remind the citizens of their intercessor.
At 16:30 on the La Gardunya Square, guests will be greeted by the traditional giant dolls, which all children and adults adore. Having met with the giants, the audience will start dancing with bastoners – groups of artists in white and red suits performing the Catalan folk dance with sticks. The dynamic presentation will be continued by a comic bullfight called Els bouets i la vaqueta: women and men have to dress up in a strange attire with a bull head and massive horns and run the baton. After this amusing competition, a colorful parade will march on the streets of Raval. And at 19:00, when artists and spectators arrive at the square of Joan Amades, the first day of the fiesta will come to an end with an amazing fire show: giant dragons spitting flames.
It is interesting that the celebration will have a so-called «afteparty». March 19th at 12:00 at Plaça de Santa Madrona, which is in Poble Sec, a group of Castellers will build several “living towers” in honor of the patroness of the city.
By the way, it is believed that Barcelonians «undeservedly forgotten» the Holy Madrona. And although her sculpture rises in the Baluard Gardens, not far from Paral·lel, it can only be viewed on an open doors day – every first and third Sunday of the month.
